BAROSSA VALLEY, SOUTH AUSTRALIA
VINEYARD NOTES
The Barossa has two Spanish varieties being Grenache and Mataro which have a long history both here and in the EU. Rosenvale believes this area of the world has a few more varieties of interest so we planted our family vineyards with Tinta Cao, Graciano and Tinta Madeira with the sole purpose of making a Rose’ wine. The vineyards are young and on a modern trellis system. We prune for target yields in consultation with mother nature and the vineyard is managed on a Dynamic viticulture system.
HARVEST NOTES
Barossa’s reduced yield is partly due to the hot, dry December and early- mid-January, however many growers managed this well with prudent attention to maintaining soil moisture and irrigating before heatwave events. Barossa’s harvest yield will largely be determined by the ‘up and down’ temperatures in spring last year. There were many cold nights through mid-November, with day and night temperatures 1 to 1.5 degrees below average, which upset flowering. In early November there was also a period of strong winds, which didn’t help vine function. Then in late November, later flowering areas and varieties were affected by extremely hot weather, notably the 42-degree day on 20 November. The grapes are harvested at the same time based on combined flavour, acid, tannins with a target of about 12.5 Baume for the resulting juice. All the fruit is destemmed and pressed in our open cage bag press, chilled, settled, and then allowed to warm with wild yeast starting ferment. At some point cultured yeast is added to finish ferment.
TASTING NOTES
Pale salmon pink in colour with a lifted generous nose of wild strawberries and lychees. The palate is dry but with an upfront fruit sweetness complimented by a fresh acid backbone to the wine with flavours of wild red berries and hints of spice, great length and persistence.
"It's elegant and restrained on the nose showing raspberry, nectarine, lemon peel and subtle spice notes, leading to a finely focused palate that's linear and vibrant. It's firmly structured by bright acidity, finishing long and mouth-watering. At its best: now to 2023." 93 Points - Wine Orbit, Sam Kim.
