Vintage 2020
BAROSSA VALLEY, SOUTH AUSTRALIA
VINEYARD NOTES
The Rosenzweig vineyard which is grown on sandy brown loam over red clay and a deep limestone mix. Planted in 1935 and surviving the Barossa vine pull in the 1980’s and going against economic advice at the time to pull out the vines, Aubrey Rosenzweig left these vines in the ground and today we can enjoy his vision and ability to see These vines enjoy a small amount of additional food and supplementary water to help maintain then on tough days. The vine is trained to a single wire trellis system with lift wires. Detailed spur pruning gives better bunch positioning and a limited number of grapes per year.
HARVEST NOTES
The growing season started dry and continued that way. The 2019 calendar year was the driest on record for the Nuriootpa. In early November flowering wine grapes endured a period of strong winds, followed by many cold nights through mid-November (day and night temperatures 1 to 1.5 degrees below average). Then in late November, extremely hot weather affected later flowering areas and
varieties, notably the 42-degree day on 20 November. A hot December followed. Of the last 16 days in December, 11 days were over 35C and 8 over 40C. These extremes meant the vines generally set below average bunch size, and berries remained smaller than normal as they developed. Average February maximum temperature was 26.5C – 3C below average. This, combined with 21mm of rain on 1 February, enabled many vineyards to slowly ripen their grapes, with flavour and phenological ripening keeping pace with sugar
development. Flavours and colours and the overall quality is exceptional. Hand harvested, destemmed, cultured yeast, 8 days on skins, twice daily pump over and plunge, slotted caged bag pressed. 60% French oak, balance seasoned.
"Offering fabulous varietal purity as well as intensity, the wine shows sweet plum, floral, olive and roasted nut aromas on the nose. The palate displays excellent concentration and flow, wonderfully complemented by plush texture and rounded tannins, making it highly appealing. At its best: now to 2032." 95 Points - Wine Orbit, Sam Kim.
