Reviews

We greatly appreciate all feedback on our Rosenvale wines, the following is a selection of our wine reviews and editorial by some of the leading wine industry wine critics.

"I predict a lot of Big Aussie Red lovers will go for them in a big way."

Blockbuster, body-slammer, sledgehammer, call them what you will. Very full-bodied red wines have a place. They’re even fashionable in some parts of the globe (think Priorat).

In Australia, opinion-leaders seem to have deserted the genre. Light-bodied red is currently more vogue-ish. Gamay, pinot noir and pinot meunier, fruit-driven grenache, for example. But there is still a market for Big Aussie Reds. And I confess to enjoying them myself, given the right food (hearty) and weather (cool).

To my palate, the Rosenvale reds tread the fine line: they’re opulent without going over the top.

Rosenvale Vineyards VINE VALE ROAD Grenache 2021- 95/100 - Medium-deep red-purple, bright colour; there are sweet raspberry and red cherry pastille aromas, sweetly succulent, the palate deliciously fruit-sweet and yet also well structured, with a sheen of medium-firm tannins backing up. Long and full on the finish. A serious grenache with drink-now appeal as well as ageing potential 01 JAN 2023 (Ageing 2024–2033)

Rosenvale Vineyards ROSEBACK Barossa Valley Shiraz 2021 - 92/100 - Inky purple-red colour; deep, full, superripe and well-oaked bouquet of rich aromas—chocolate and coconut, earth and vanilla—the palate full-bodied and dense with chewy tannins, some alcohol wamth, and plush texture. A big, hearty red with plenty of flesh on the bones, which would reward time in the cellar. 07 JAN 2023 Cellaring 2024–2036

Rosenvale Vineyard ESTATE GROWN Grenache Barossa Valley 2020 Screw 14.5% $35: a free-flowing grenache, attesting to just how well suited this established variety is to these warm parts. Full-bodied to be sure, but drinks more like a mid-weighted expression. Raspberry liqueur, bing cherry, damson plum, lilac and rosewater. The finish is bridged by a lithe and dusty saline slake of long-limbed tannins. I’d like even more! All the same, this works well with the 25% complement of whole bunches imbuing a herbal complexity as much as a grounded pinosité. Fine length and impressive detail. Very smart. Mellifluous. Even better after a day opened 94 points 2021-2025

Rosenvale Vineyards GOTTFRIED Shiraz Barossa Valley 2020 Screw 14.5% $28: a contemporary, fresher expression than the regional norm. Yet this is far from gently extracted carbonic soup. There is dimension: tannins corralling the dark berry, fruitcake spice, liquorice strap, salumi, clove and pepper. The vanilla pod oak, dutifully placed as a further bulwark, rather than excessive. The finish, a long and gracious stream of Barossan flavour and toned generosity. Delicious drinking 92 points 2021-2028

Rosenzweig JR (James Rosenzweig)
Vintage    2019
Shiraz: a brilliant crimson in the glass, a striking wine by virtue of its levity, a chiaroscuro of febrile energy, contrasted against Barossan density and weight. Lilac and blue fruits. Anise, raspberry bon bon, clove and pepper grind. The tannins, a veil of sandy tension, meld to a gentle flow of freshness serving to obviate the heat. The finish is consummate: satin smooth and long, but with no forfeit of textural attrition. Delicious drinking 95 points 2022-2031

Rosenzweig der Aub
Vintage   2020
Variety: Grenache
This boasts striking potential, suggesting it may well become the exemplar of the range in time. Poised, detailed, fresh and immensely drinkable as a result.  The tannins reach across the palate to sustain the fruit while suppressing it in the name of tension; long limbs to incite the saliva and entice the next glass.  The riffs on tamarind, turmeric, pomegrante, white pepper, raspberry, ume and sapid red cherry are compelling. The 50% whole bunch equation imparts accents of mezcal and clove, while evincing textural authority. This grows in stature with time in the glass. Very impressive Grenache. Mid-weighted of feel, transparent, fresh and almost balletic. This is a party to which Barossa is tardy. Here is the invitation 96 points 2022-2030
